A humanitarian visa allows people to reside in the US temporarily to escape threats such as human trafficking, abuse, or retaliation. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offers several humanitarian visas for non-US citizens facing urgent threats. - T visa: Victims of trafficking and their families can apply for this visa. T visas last up to four years, at which time the person can apply for lawful permanent residence.
- Abuse and VAWA: People who have suffered some form of abuse by a family member may qualify for an Abuse or VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) visa. To apply for this visa, at least one of the following must be true:
A. The abuser is an employee of the US government.
B. The abuser is a member of the US military.
C. The victim was subjected to assault or cruelty in the US.
- U VISA: Individuals and minor children may qualify if they were the victim of a severe crime in the US or if they violated US laws. In these cases, the victim must report the crime to the police, and the victim must cooperate with authorities.
